1. Basic Jungle Survival and Bushcraft Course

11 –15 June and 9 – 13 July 2006

Join us on a jungle survival and bush craft course in the forests in the southern part of the Belait district of Brunei.  This programme is for all those who enjoy the jungle and wish to gain knowledge and skills so that they may carry out activities in or around remote areas with increased confidence. As this course is about learning and not endurance, only an ordinary level of fitness is needed.

The course covers all aspects of survival and bushcraft skills and will include indigenous and “Western“ methods. You will live in the forest and learn to improvise and make shelters, water collection and cooking utensils, weapons, traps and snares. You will learn how to make different types of fire without the use of matches or lighters, and how not to get lost. You will not be expected to live off the land nor expected to trap or kill game during this course, although one meal will be of natural food.

After the course you will go to an Iban longhouse where you will receive certificates.

About the instructors:

Stuart Goring is a professional expedition leader who has made bush craft his life's work. While he also designs survival equipment his motto is minimalist -Success is not measured by what you have, but by what you can do without.” When not on expedition he is to be found all over the world learning and teaching bushcraft. Stuart has tested his survival skills in the Canadian artic and the Arabian desert and his jungle skills in Borneo with some of the worlds foremost respected military instructors.  He has also studied with the nomadic Penan of the Northern Interior of Sarawak and with the San Bushmen of Namibia, learning to trap and live in a hunter-gatherer lifestyle.

Jamit is a longhouse chief. He grew up, and still lives, in the Borneo forests. Over the years he has guided and supported many expeditions and has appeared in television documentaries demonstrating the uses and preparation of medicinal and edible plants as well as the making of cordage, shelters, tools and utensils from forest products. Jamit’s jungle philosophy is truly minimalist - for him it is a supermarket!
